I am running for Mayor of Kansas City. I want your support.
I am running for Mayor because our City needs strong leadership. The next Mayor must be willing and able to make tough decisions and difficult choices. I have the experience – both as a member of the City Council for eight years and as County Executive for twelve – that allows me to understand how policy is made and how it must be implemented.
Too often, these days, elections are about personality. This election needs to be about policy.
Our City needs a long-term Preventive Maintenance Policy – to repair our roads and infrastructure and keep them in repair.
Our City needs a long-term Environmental Leadership Policy – not just to protect the planet, but to drive our economy and create good jobs.
Our City needs a long-term policy to address mental health needs and increase public safety.
We have invested much in Downtown redevelopment – and we must carry through on that important initiative – but we must also have a long-term Neighborhood Revitalization Policy.
I have long been a proponent of light-rail – and we need to be sure that our City’s new light-rail system is an efficient part of a long-term Public Transportation Policy.
Good intentions aren’t enough. Talk is easy, but the next Mayor’s job will be hard. None of the City’s challenges can be met with “quick fixes”. The next Mayor must have the energy to confront these challenges, the ability and commitment to achieve real, long-term change – and the vision to see how great our City can be.
